  Broadway Reviews

All Shook Up
As the disco music of ABBA has audiences dancing in the aisles at Mamma Mia! and the Billy Joel songbook fuels Twyla Tharp's electric hit Movin' Out, Broadway turns its ear to another pop icon with this brand new musical comedy: the one, the only Elvis Presley! All Shook Up is not a biographical revue of the late, great star of the screen and pop charts, but instead a musical inspired by and featuring the songs made famous by Presley. Somewhere in middle America in 1955, one girl's wish and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger will lead a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock and roll. This irresistible new musical features 24 legendary Elvis classics including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Love Me Tender,” “Don't Be Cruel,” “Can't Help Falling in Love” and “All Shook Up.” All Shook Up will have a world premiere engagement at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre from December 19, 2004 through January 23, 2005 prior to landing at Broadway's Palace Theatre in February, 2005. It focuses on his relationship with his daughter, Sara, who wants him to face the harsh realities of his life.
  Avenue Q
Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod--a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Avenue Q debuted at the Vineyard Theatre off-Broadway and was a quick hit with both critics and theatergoing urbanites, all of which took to the grown-up life lessons that the show has to offer. Audiences continued to grow when the little-show-that-could moved uptown, opening at Broadway's Golden Theatre in the summer of 2003 to even more widespread rave reviews. Tony voters agreed with the critics and awarded Avenue Q as the Best Musical of the season as well as choosing to honor its young writers trophies for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical. After a fateful meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them.   The Phantom of the Opera

Currently the second longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera has played to over 100 million people in 22 countries in 113 cities around the world since its first performance. The New York production alone has enchanted over 10 million audience members in its nearly 17-year run. In The Phantom of the Opera, a young singer, Christine, is charmed by a mysterious specter who haunts the Paris Opera house. Based on Gaston Leroux's famous novel, the musical's tale begins as unexplained accidents have been occurring throughout the Paris Opera, and the stuck-up diva, Carlotta, refuses to go on. Christine takes her place and is a triumph. At her opening night, she meets her childhood friend, Raoul. Alone in her dressing room, she finally meets the Phantom who has taught her to sing so beautifully. Taking her to his lair in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, the Phantom declares his love for Christine, but she soon learns his terrible secret. The story moves from the Phantom's underground hideaway to the dizzying roof of the Opera House, as the Phantom and Raoul battle for Christine's love.   Based on the Academy Award-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers is the story of down-on-his-luck theatrical producer Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, a mousy accountant. Together, they hatch the ultimate scam: Raise more money than you need for a sure-fire Broadway fiasco...and pocket the difference. Their Broadway brainchild is none other than Springtime for Hitler. The Producers has become a Broadway phenomenon, turning the tradition of a Broadway musical on its head and earning more Tony Awards than any other show in the history of the Great White Way. With tunes and a book by superstar comedian Mel Brooks and co-bookwriter Thomas Meehan (Hairspray), this big-time Broadway musical is truly one of the funniest shows around. The success of the show has made way for a remake of the big-screen version due out in 2005 and featuring original stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, as well as Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. St James Theatre 246 West 44th Street. Tuesday - 7pm Wednesday-Saturday - 8PM Wednesday & Saturday - 2PM Sunday - 3PM. 2 hrs 40 mins with one intermission.

  Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Edward Albee's caustic masterpiece returns with Kathleen Turner and Bill Irwin in the leads. Considered Edward Albee's masterpiece, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a caustic portrayal about marriage and dysfunctional relationships. This revival--marking the first time the play has been seen on Broadway in almost thirty years--stars Kathleen Turner (recently seen in The Granduate) as the ferocious Martha and Bill Irwin (The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?) as husband George. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? first premiered on Broadway in 1962 starring stage greats Uta Hagen and George Grizzard and going on to win the Tony Award for Best Play the following year. The 1966 film version was met with great acclaim, winning five Academy Awards including trophies for stars Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis. Don't miss out on the chance to see Albee's unforgettable characters spar on Broadway once again this spring! Longacre Theatre 220 West 48th Street.
  Wicked
Long before Dorothy drops in, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey and how these two unlikely friends grew to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. This fantasy-filled musical was the winner of three 2004 Tony Awards including a Best Actress nod for high-belting, stunning star Idina Menzel and the awards for Best Costume Design and Best Scenic Design. From real flying monkeys to a trip to the Emerald City and a soaring, modern score by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is a true spectacle for the eyes and ears. The twists and turns in Gregory Maguire's incredibly imaginative back-story to The Wizard of Oz makes audiences literally gasp with delight. But not only that, Wicked is a truly heartfelt story of friendship and love. As Richard Zoglin of Time Magazine put it, "If every musical had a brain, a heart and the courage of Wicked, Broadway really would be a magical place!" Gershwin Theatre 222 West 51 Street. Tuesday - 7PM Wednesday - Saturday - 8PM Wednesday & Saturday - 2PM Sunday - 3PM. 2 hrs 45 mins with one intermission.

Off-Broadway Reviews
Blue Man Group

Blue Man Group is one of New York's longest-running shows and one of its hardest to describe! In the show, three enigmatic bald and blue characters take the audience through a multi-sensory experience that combines theater, percussive music, art, science and vaudeville into a form of entertainment that is like nothing else either on or off Broadway. The show's origins lead back to the late '80s, when longtime friends Chris Wink, Phil Stanton and Matt Goldman began to appear on the streets of Manhattan covered in blue make-up. The appearances led to a theatrical show, which premiered at the legendary performance space La Mama, ETC and finally to off-Broadway's Astor Place Theatre in 1991. Since then, over 60 Blue Men have entertained crowds in New York, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas and beyond. Viva La Blue Man Group!

Cookin
Stomp meets Iron Chef in this fun, zesty Korean import! Staged in a restaurant kitchen, Cookin' is a hilarious non-verbal percussion show featuring four crazy Korean chefs who are working against the clock to prepare a complete wedding banquet. With an overheated Maitre D' intent on keeping the foursome on schedule, Cookin' slices, dices, chops and beats a delightfully spellbinding blend of martial arts, drumming and dance that will leave audiences hungry for more! Prior to landing at off-Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre, Cookin' played in Europe, Asia and all around North America. In fact, over two million people have watched these lovable chefs and their saucy shenanigans. Come see why audiences (and especially kids) have embraced this unique show. Oh, but don't forget to eat first! The food may look good as it flies in the air, but dinner is not served after the show! Minetta Lane Theatre 18 Minetta Lane. Performed at Club El Flamingo in the heart of Manhattan, The Donkey Show welcomes you to a magic fantasia where you are free, where you are fabulous and where anything can happen! A betwitching bacchanal based on William Shakespeare's libido-laced A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Donkey Show opened to an unsuspecting theatrical community in 1999. The musically driven evening's sensually-soaked 70 minutes tells the story of euphoric lust gone haywire. Menapause the Musical
Menopause the Musical is a musical parody about the meeting of four women at a lingerie sale at Bloomingdale's. The four--a power professional, an aging soap opera star, an Iowa housewife, and a lost-in-the-sixties ex-hippie--have nothing in common except a black lace bra... and memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, chocolate binges, wrinkles, plastic surgery, hormones, not enough sex, and much more. Stomp

Stomp is a high-energy, percussive symphony, coupled with dance, played entirely on unconventional instruments, such as garbage can lids, buckets, brooms and sticks. It is a movement, of bodies, objects, sounds - even abstract ideas, made completely original through the use of everyday objects in totally non-traditional ways. Stomp creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas were a group of street performers commonly know as "buskers," who spent their time trying to grab people's attention in Brighton, England. They toured the world with their rhythmic antics, eventually landing full-force in downtown Manhattan, where the show has been making people of all ages tap (or stomp) their feet for over ten years. Don't miss it!

For the ultimate experience... eat, drink, dance, converse and allow yourself to be caught up in the activities. This all-inclusive evening of entertainment will be something you and your friends will be talking about for many years to come. In this hilarious interactive comedy, the audience is part of the show. As "invited guests," the audience begins the evening at Sofia's at the Edison Hotel to witness the holy nuptials. Following the ceremony, a rousing reception takes place. Dancing to a four-piece band, champagne toasts, a full pasta dinner and a slice of the wedding cake are all provided by the Nunzio and Vitale "families."
